[User Picture]05:27 am - Well... I've finally found something HP WILL replace without me shipping the laptop.
Power up the laptop... clickclickclickbeep... clickclickclickbeep... lather, rinse, repeat, wait about five to eight minutes for it to give up before I can get into BIOS or boot from a CD, both report no IDE device connected then. Remove the hard drive? Instant boot from CD or entry into BIOS. Yup, HD's toast. Either the logic board fried, or the drive itself gave up the ghost after 18 months of being lugged around by yours truly. Never say I'm gentle on my gear, because it's not true. Careful with it, yes, but not gentle by any stretch.

Just had to untangle that my warrenty expires on July 2008, NOT 2006 like the first tech thought. Somehow my 3-year accidental-damage-protection never got associated with my laptop before now, which confirms that all my previous repairs were on the stock warrenty including the replacement screen at least.

I am SO glad I back up all my important data to both the 1GB flash-memory card I keep in the laptop and all of my login data to a remote server on top of that. Only thing I've lost is a few D20 characters, and a metric shit-tonne of artwork and most of the MP3's I'd downloaded from various music-appreciation LJ groups.

And the stupid thing? I'd just gone through deleting all my crap, getting ready to back up the artwork and MP3's to CD-R's tommorow before I started reinstalling the OS to give it a clean sweep upgrade to support a split 64-bit/32-bit environment with fully encrypted HD and security instead of the lazy-no-password-login I had before, in preperation for a project I'll need a proper IDE and 32-bit compilation configured for. I'll have less HD space available, but that's not that big a deal at least. :-)

And the really lucky part? I'd just finished uploading a 320kbit MP3 of a song I've been hunting for for over five years to my remote server after finishing downloading it earlier today during a brief glimpse when the master seeder for the torrent re-appeared for an hour or so. I've spent the better part of a month downloading one MP3 from this torrent about 100k at a time, and it's a 12MB MP3 because it's such high quality.3 commentsLeave a comment
