[User Picture]Okay, I'm sure most folks that read this know I play Ironclaw right? Heck, I'm the guy that made the fresh-and-spiffy, easier-to-print PNG version of their character sheets when their current ones sucked, and they liked em' enough to use em' instead. :-)
Well, I have a BIG HONKING GRIPE to air, but it's going to be a little technical in IronClaw-speak. So... if you're curious...
Okay, my big gripe?
Stupid people that make characters with a D4 body, and try to give them a weapon and expect them to do diddly except run away and get swatted at!
I've gotten fed up, I've decided to write a nice, big, technical page detailing just how to properly build Donovan as someone barely 4'4" but still waving a sword around about as big as good ol' Donovan's there. Click the link to see the sword, folks. Don't be bone-headed.
First off, let's start with the D4. That gives you what...
Okay... let's skip tracks a moment... go to weapons. I'm gonna use JadeClaw just because they've answered that timeless question with a resounding RIGHT HERE, MA'AM!
What's the highest lift bonus we can give a D4-body character? Why, that's easy, it's a 4, 1 +3 from Incredible Strength (+3 Strength) for 7 points. So, let's run with that idea. What weapons, that have a reach of 3 paces or more (which means the weapon is 2 paces, 6 feet, or longer) can we wield without them being awkard praytell?
More than one, and they're all average-cost, it turns out...
No, I didn't say it would be a huge list, but look at the restrictions I placed on the search. Cannot be awkard, meaning the pipsqueak can use any maneuver or attack they want. Must have a reach of 3 or more, so the weapon is LARGER THAN THEY ARE. That's pretty freakin' tight restrictions, right? And we still have two choices... Okay, let's compare, class...
Polearm: 2d8 damage, 3-4 reach. Think, sword, but handle as long as the blade here, folks. BIG freakin' polearm, long as *BEEP* too.
Spear2d8 damage, but only a 2-3 reach. Polearms slash. This turns them into shiskabob. Yes, all of them. At once...
I'll take the Polearm, Bob...
Okay, we have our weapon now, and 7 points of our advantages purchased. Hell, there's 90% of most characters built right now. And we still have a D12 and a D10 to put in speed and career to give this fellow some nice skill rolls with his baby weapon. Toss in high personal skill, we're looking at 2d12+d10 for a to-hit, not too uncommon among d4-body characters. But, look at the damage and adaptability. Instead of d8+d4 for damage... we get 2d8+d10. And instead of a reach of 1... we get 3-4 paces. So yeah, we might have to actually back up away to cut someone with this... I think we managed to succeed.
Oh, and here's the character sheet I worked up for a fully fleshed-out example of same:
